Special Announcement from Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club

On November 6, 2009 the officers and board members of the Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club regrettably decided to cancel all card games (Texas Hold ‘em Poker, GIDCGO, Card Day) until January or February 2010.  It is illegal to pay and play these games without a proper license from Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC).  Due to some changes in the state laws effective July 1, 2009, our previous Annual Charity Game Night License is no longer good and IGC has asked the club to stop playing these games.  Effective July 1, 2009, only Fraternal and Veteran clubs/groups can get the Annual Charity Game Night License.
Under the new changes to the state laws effective July 1 ,2009, the Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club can get a Charity Game Night License (not Annual one); however, this license allows no more than six (6) charity game night events per year.  We will work very hard to apply for one so that we can resume playing cards (Texas Hold ‘em Poker, GIDCGO and Card Day) in January or February 2010.   Unfortunately, we will not conduct these gaming activities as many as we used to.
We can continue to play Bingo on Sundays under our Annual Bingo License and also we can continue to play Indy Club and other activities such as raffles, door prizes, pull-tabs, tip boards under our Annual Raffle License.  We cannot play cards under the Bingo/Raffle licenses.
More information on gaming laws is available on IGC’s website at
www.in.gov/igc.
If you do not like these gaming laws, please ask several legislators for a new exemption to the state gaming laws for small clubs/groups like GIDC.
Thank you!!!

Secretary
Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club, Inc.

When you have a complaint about places not providing interpreters, you NEED to call the numbers above and REPORT it.  Change will ONLY happen in Fort Wayne when YOU make it happen.  Furthermore, you MUST do this IMMEDIATELY — the sooner you can document this, the better it is for EVERYONE.  Once you have made the call, the Civil Rights office will take it from there.

Your Civil Rights — nobody can bully you into NOT calling the Civil Rights office.  This is your civil right.  Doctors, nurses, office personnel only need to be asked ONE TIME to provide you with an interpreter — if they refuse, then leave — go home and make the call to the number above and report it.

IF THE COMPLAINT IS AT A STATE OR FEDERALLY FUNDED FACILITY, then do NOT call the Civil Rights office — call DHHS.   State and Federal funded offices are the only ones governed by DHHS.

Think of it like this — how many times are you going to put your hand in the fire before you realize that you’re going to get burned?  The same thing with these places that won’t provide an interpreter.  There’s NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER for businesses that don’t comply!  If they tell you “NO”, then call the numbers above — THAT’S ALL YOU NEED TO DO!  Nothing more!

BOTTOM LINE — EMPOWERMENT!!

CUTS ON CLOSED CAPTIONING OF TV SHOWS

CC is NOT going away!  Per the FCC rules, by January 1st, 2006, 100% of all new programming must be captioned.  That includes broadcast, satellite and cable shows.  Also, all EMERGENCY information must also be captioned.  If the information is voiced over the tv stations, it must also be visually available.

What to do if there are complaints about the lack of captioning:  You can contact the local tv station, satellite service or cable operator.  Make sure you give them the name of the program, the day you tried to watch it, the channel/network it was on, and also be sure to give your name and address and contact information.  Make sure you keep a copy of all letters, phone calls, e-mails, etc.  Remember to be polite, be clear and don't yell at them as we all know that yelling doesn't do any good.

If that doesn't work, contact the editor of this website.  She has talked to ABC, CBS and NBC of Fort Wayne and might be able to help you if need be.

The last thing to do?  DO NOTHING -- and the problem continues.  WHY BE THAT WAY??  FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS!!

FIFTH FREEDOM NETWORK

Fifth Freedom Network (FFN) is an independent
non-profit organization in Fort Wayne.  It is directed by Sheri Caveda, an advocate for people with disabilities.

FFN's mission is to teach and train disabled persons to advocate (gain inclusion) for themselves.

FFN's goal is to teach us the steps in learning how to properly advocate for ourselves.

FFN WILL NOT ADVOCATE FOR US!

FFN will help us clarify the different issues we have and organize them.

FFN will help us prioritize our issues.

FFN will help us develop our plan of action.

FFN promotes finding solutions to problems and
not fighting battles.

If an organization has good leaders, it will learn from FFN, learn to provide for others.

If an organization is successful and recognized as a good organization in the Fort Wayne area, they can apply for funding and become their own non-profit organization.

DRIVING TEST/WRITTEN TEST

If you need to take a Driver’s test and/or a written test, contact your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to set up a date and that you are in need of an interpreter.  OR you may contact Madonna Hoover, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Drivers Services Department, phone 317-234-3392 or e-mail her at mahoover@bmv.IN.gov

DHHS gave BMV a list of all the interpreter agencies in the state so that when a request comes in they will contact 2 interpreting agencies (per your request or doesn’t matter—choice is yours), and an interpreter will be provided on your test date.

If you have ANY problems or questions, contact Madonna at the above info.
